Rosenthal, one of the largest porcelain producing firms in Germany was founded in 1889. A number of factories comprise the Rosenthal manufacturing operations including two that produce Thomas china a subsidiary company. Rosenthal has manufactured an extraordinary, large variety of products over the years including porcelain dining services, figurines, accessory and collector items, utilitarian wares and art objects. Rosenthal has also produced a full line of crystal items, flatware and even furniture.
The company's most important distinguishing feature has been its dedication to the appreciation of modern art and decoration, and the alliances it has made with top modern designers and artists. As early as the turn of the century, Rosenthal was producing porcelain that reflected the current styles of the day. Unlike many of Rosenthal's competitors who were still producing shapes and patterns based on popular eighteenth century designs, the company quickly embraced the "Art Nouveau" and incorporated this style into designs in porcelain.
The tradition has continued throughout the twentieth century. Rosenthal's moderne figurines produced in the 1920s and 1930s are some of the very best in porcelain designs from the Art Deco period. The successful mid-century dinnerware lines designed by industrial designer
Raymond Loewy and another by Walter Gropius, a founder of the Bauhaus, led the way to the modern era of designer and artist porcelains that reads like a "Who's Who"
Modern designers employed by Rosenthal since WW2 include Tapio Wirkkala, Timo Sarpaneva, Emilio Pucci, Bjorn Wiinblad, Piero Fornasetti and Gianni Versace.
Artists include Victor Vasarely, Salvador Dali, Roy Lichtenstein and Frank Stella.
