Wedgwood Quince Bread & Butter Wedgwood is one of the most recognized brand names of china in the world. It represents the highest level of accomplishment in the English fine china industry and has done so for nearly 250 years. Josiah Wedgwood started the company in 1759 when he was only 29 years old. Prior to opening his own pottery, he had been experimenting with various ceramic bodies and glazes for years. Throughout Wedgwood's life he made numerous innovations in ceramics and production methods that continue to be used by the company today.

Wedgwood Patrician Salad Plate Josiah Wedgwood had his first big success when he received a commission by Queen Charlotte to produce an extensive set of his creamware, a cream colored earthenware with a lustrous glaze. It is said that Wedgwood produced the ware for the Queen at a very small profit, but the appointment won him a great deal of recognition. Because of the association with the Queen, Wedgwood's creamware soon came to be known as Queen's ware. Queen's ware became extremely popular. This success allowed Wedgwood to expand his pottery experimentation and move his operation to a larger factory in Etruria.

Wedgwood Belle Fleur Bread & Butter Additional discoveries soon after the move included the black Basalt ware and Jasperware. Both of these wares proved to be huge, long lasting successes. Today the white relief work on the blue background of Jasperware is instantly recognizable and a symbol for the Wedgwood Company. Production of Basalt has never once ceased since its introduction more than 200 years ago.

Wedgwood Cream Color On Lavender (Shell Edge) Salad Plate Josiah Wedgwood died in 1795. During his lifetime, not only did Wedgwood make brilliant contributions to the china industry, he was a very politically forward thinking individual. He was a vocal opponent of slavery. He was a supporter of the American Revolution, but could not do so publicly for fear of being accused of treason. He did support the French Revolution though he knew revolution was not good for the china business. He frequently placed his principles above his business interests.

Wedgwood Edme Bread & Butter Sons Josiah II and John along with Josiah's nephew Tom Byerly began to run the company around the turn of the nineteenth century after Josiah's death. Soon afterward, about 1810, Wedgwood fine bone china was introduced. The Wedgwood Company remained active in Etruria under the direction of various descendents of Josiah Wedgwood for the next hundred plus years.

Wedgwood Florentine (W4219) Cup & Saucer During the 1940s, production was moved to a new location in Barlaston. ("Etruria" or "Barlaston" is sometimes incorporated into the mark on the bottom of pieces of Wedgwood. This frequently confuses collectors who think that the factory location is a pattern name.)

Wedgwood Wellesley Bread & Butter After World War 2 the Wedgwood Company enjoyed much economic success and expansion. In 1966 Wedgwood acquired both the Susie Cooper Pottery and the Adams and Sons Pottery, followed by the acquisition of the Coalport and Cauldon potteries in 1967 and the Johnson Brothers Company in 1968. In 1970, it was the Meakin and Midwinter companies that were absorbed into the Wedgwood family of companies.

Wedgwood Tonquin (Ruby) Bread & Butter Around 1990, the huge Irish crystal manufacturer, Waterford, and Wedgwood merged to form the giant Waterford-Wedgwood Group. While enjoying the combined economic strength of the two companies, each maintains a separate, independent business structure from one another.
