Chintz isn't chintzy!
|
Chintzware patterns became popular the first time around in the 1930s and remained so through the 1960s.
Indian textiles that were decorated all over with colorful flowers and birds were the influence for the
lovely all over floral chintz patterns of china. In fact, the Indian word for the colorful fabric was
"Chintes"!
Although chintz patterns of china were originally relatively inexpensive, they actually required a great
deal of expertise and skill to produce. A multi - colored lithograph transfer was applied to the pieces by
hand and had to be matched up perfectly to create the beautiful pieces. Prior to development of the
lithograph transfers, chintz patterns had to be hand painted which made the early patterns too expensive
to mass produce. Since the new lithograph-decorated chintz was so bright and cheerful and also very
affordable, the ware sold well even during the depression years. Fine hand decorated bone china was
about five times more expensive than chintz china.
Over the past five or ten years avid collectors have driven the market prices up for vintage chintz patterns considerably. Although Royal Winton is the best known and most collectible manufacturer of chintzware, other companies like Crown Ducal, James Kent and Lord Nelson produced many beautiful chintz patterns as well. The patterns by other manufacturers can frequently be collected at a lower price, and offer a good value in this hot collector’s market.
Although some chintz ware collectors acquire pieces in only one pattern, most have a variety of patterns in their chintz collection. Some collect only certain brands, or piece types like teapots or cups and saucers, while others mix it all up and buy anything they like. The ware actually may look its best in a grouping with mixed patterns. A mixed grouping of chintz ware patterns creates a visual impression similar to a wild flower garden where bunches of different colored blooming flowers emerge randomly. Different colors, types, sizes, shapes and forms all add texture and depth to a chintz collection.
