Q: My china is made by Limoges, do you carry this brand?
A: The answer to this question is no, and yes. First of all, Limoges is not a brand name; it is the name of a city in France. The misconception about the term Limoges is very common. I think one of the main reasons for the confusion, can be attributed to the Limoges based factories themselves. Many times, the mark “Limoges” is more prominent than the factory’s trademark name or logo, or the piece may only be marked “Limoges”. Thousands of companies have come and gone over the last couple hundred years in Limoges, most of them known for good quality but some of them not. However, overall the region is still synonymous with good quality and therefore the term Limoges is proudly emblazoned on every piece of porcelain that comes from there. (It is much like the term Champagne. If a winery produces their sparkling beverage in Champagne, France they proudly display it on their bottle, and no one else from outside that region can.) In the 1950’s, one enterprising American company dubbed their china company “American Limoges” in order to capitalize on the “Limoges” name.
Now, in response to your question…no, we do not carry the brand “Limoges”, but yes we do carry brands manufactured in Limoges, France.
The best known of these brands are Haviland,
Bernardaud, and Ceralene/Raynaud.
