Q: You carry my pattern Delrose by Flintridge, but evidently there are two styles, coupe shape and rim shape. What do these terms mean?
A: Coupe and rim describe the two primary shapes that most china patterns have. The rim shape is the more common one. When you look at a flat piece like a dinner plate, a rim shaped pattern will have a rim. In other words, if you look in the middle of the plate it should be flat, as your eye moves toward the edge of the plate you will notice a slight curve up which creates a small shoulder and then a flattening out that creates the raised rim around the center of the plate. The coupe shape is distinguished by a lack of a rim. If you look at the middle of a dinner plate it is flat and very gradually tapers up all the way to the edge of the plate like a very, very shallow bowl.
